How to Write Prompts for Logo and Icon Design with AI
I'll start with the honest caveat, AI-generated logos are a good way to explore directions fast, not a reliable way to get a final, usable logo file. I've used AI tools plenty for early concept exploration before handing something off to be properly vectorized and refined, and that's really where they shine. If you go in expecting mood boards and fast iteration rather than a finished asset, the results are actually pretty useful.
Why logo prompts are different from other image prompts
Most AI art prompts benefit from more descriptive detail, richer scenes, more atmosphere, more texture. Logo prompts work in the opposite direction, you're fighting against the model's tendency to add detail, gradients, and complexity when what you actually want is something simple enough to work at the size of a favicon. Being explicit about restraint matters more here than almost anywhere else.
Start with the concept, not the execution
Describe what the logo should represent before describing how it should look. "A logo representing growth and sustainability for a plant nursery" gives the model a concept to work from, then you layer style on top, flat design, minimalist, geometric, rather than jumping straight to style words with no underlying idea attached.
Example prompt
"A minimalist logo of a mountain and rising sun, representing new beginnings, flat design, two-color palette, simple geometric shapes, white background."
Always specify flat, simple, and the color count
Three phrases do most of the work here: flat design keeps it from turning into a 3D render, simple or minimalist keeps unnecessary detail out, and naming an exact color count, two-color palette, single color, keeps the model from throwing in gradients and extra shades that won't work well when the logo gets scaled down or printed in one color.
White background, always
Unless you specifically want the mark integrated into a scene, always add white background or transparent background to your prompt. Without it, AI tools love placing logos on textured surfaces, mockups, or gradient backgrounds that look nice as a single image but make the actual mark hard to extract and use anywhere else.
Fight the model's instinct to add detail. Simpler is the goal here.
Icons work the same way, just smaller in scope
App icons and small UI icons follow the identical logic, concept first, then flat, simple, and a tight color palette. The main difference is you're usually generating a single symbol rather than a symbol plus wordmark, so the prompt can be even more narrowly focused on one clear shape.
Where this actually falls short
AI-generated logos come out as raster images, not vector files, which is a real limitation for anything beyond early concepting, a real logo needs to scale cleanly from a business card to a billboard, and a vector version done by a designer or built out by hand is what actually gets you there. Text inside logos is also still a weak point for most image models, expect to redo any wordmark separately rather than trusting the AI to render your business name correctly inside the mark.
